The Province of Matanzas, Cuba, east of Havana, includes the Caribbean's largest resort complex at Varadero Beach. Tens of thousands of Canadians and Europeans come to Varadero each year to bask in the sun at hotels like the Tryp Peninsula, Bahia Principe, Melia Varadero, Paradisus Varadero, Club Amigo, SuperClubs Breezes, and the Iberostar. The 20 kilometers of unbroken white sandy beach is the main attraction here, as witnessed in one of our Varadero travel pictures.
The old city of Matanzas is just a short drive west of Varadero, but most visitors are bused straight through on their way to Havana. That's a pity because the streets and monuments of Matanzas are worth exploring. Matanzas and Varadero Beach face the Atlantic Ocean, and the Caribbean coast to the south is often warmer and quieter. The beaches and resorts on the Caribbean side are much smaller than those at Varadero, including Playa Giron in our Bay of Pigs photo.
